Should we be teaching intermediate students how to place and remove pitons? Should we teach them some easy aid techniques (A0-A1)? Both skills are sometimes required in alpine environments, some ice climbs, leader rescue and emergency rappels when removeable gear is not an option.

Basic aid tech. should be a module available in the intermediate class . Aid is a useful technique with weather has increased the climb difficult or if off route. Learning basic aid with a standard rack would be the most useful as pitons are not usually carried for rock routes. However pitons are recommend on some ice routes and there is no instruction in the class on how to place and remove them.
