Today there are many different kinds of belay devices being sold. Also there are some older devices (Sticht plate) that are rarely used and others (figure 8) that are now recommended for very limited applications (e.g., rappelling fixed lines). There are also some newer devices (e.g., Climbing Technology Alpine Up) with interesting new capabilities.
I am wondering if we need to expand the section on belay devices to keep up with modern trends. What has occurred to me is creating a table that describes types of devices, their strengths, weaknesses and usefulness/limitations, weight, cost etc., for different situations. My fantasy is that the table would look something like the kind of table that Super Topo uses to evaluate climbing gear or the kind of table gear manufacturers us to describe the appropriateness of a piece of gear for different climbing situations.
