With all the discussion around what to teach in self rescue, there is the reality that most people won’t remember prescribed steps. Our self-rescue course plans on improvisation. There are just too many ways to achieve the same objective, and rescue really is situational. The content we include should really focus on a few fundamental techniques, and some guiding principles.
With that said, I’ll credit the following to Damien Scott. Things to ask yourself before making a change to the system - Where are you putting the load - How are you going to get it unloaded - What is the backup

That makes sense. It is always good to remind people to take a breath and think about the big picture before launching into detailed rescue procedures. Sometimes a simple solution presents itself. Communication, planning and dividing up responsibilities are always good places to start, where applicable.
