The other night a friend gave me a copy of Freedom 2, published in the 60s. For entirely sentimental reasons I couldn't help but peruse it. What I discovered truly surprised me. There are numerous, excellent technical methods described in Freedom 2 that do not appear in later editions, that may be superior to those that have replaced them. Also, some sections of Freedom 2 are much better written than similar sections in later editions. It seems that over time we have lost some real mountaineering nuggets. I have started this thread as a place to put these lost nuggets so that they may at least be under consideration for inclusion in Freedom 9.
Here is start from the "Arrest ad Belay" chapter in Freedom.
Type S versus type C method for boot axe belay K2 (aka hip belay with object such as boulder or other solid feature) Dynamic hip belay (much better presentation in Freedom 2 than later editions) Wilderness travel chapter: This whole chapter is better organized and written than the same material presented in later chapters)
I strongly encourage others to go back and read older editions of Freedom to locate material that should be resurrected for inclusion in Freedom 9. This thread is the place to report what you find.
