Not having a rappel device is a rare event. However, the Basic climber has been required to learn the Carabiner Brake (a time consuming and perishable skill) as the exclusive remedy for this situation.
The reality is that the climb leader or rope lead is not going to say, as they rap out of sight, “Tough luck loosing your device. Hope you remember the Carabiner Brake.”
There are several practical alternatives for lacking a device.
*A device, from a descended climber, can be pulled up on one strand. *A climber can be lowered similar to top roping. *Group gear can include a 2-3 oz. extra device. *Leader can give up their device and use alternative such as Munter.
As carabiners evolve away from ovals, remembering and configuring the Carabiner Brake has become increasingly burdensome to the Basic climber.

We teach Basic students how to use the Texas prusik to both ascend and descend a rope. it may be simpler to down climb and self belay with a prusik.
