Discussion of avalanches belongs here, but should be expanded a bit from past editions. It is not remotely practical to include a thorough discussion of avalanche safety in FOTH, but the discussion of this topic needs to be caught up with recent developments in the field.
Some of this newer material, including more or less systematic approaches to decision making in risky environments, might well be integrated into a more general discussion of how climbers handle "risk management" in the alpine environment. I don't like the term "risk management" very much. Any suggestions for another term? It has been pointed out to me that risk is not something you can really "manage". Risk is risk; it is people and terrain that need managing.

How about 'risk adaptation'. I think that's what we are actually doing when we "manage" risk.
The depth of coverage issue for various topics is a recurrent theme in our discussions, perhaps the crux issue for the next edition especially in light of multimedia possibilities. I keep coming around to the same question: What purpose(s) does the book serve, and for whom, versus a digital version? Is the addition of multimedia possibilities an expansion of the book, a different medium in which to present the material, a means of serving different audiences, a way of keeping up with the competition, etc.? Who have been our customers, who are our current customers and who will be our future customers? I could guess, but I would rather have the data from good market research.
