What is the role of decision making and risk-benefit assessment for the climb/trip leader? Can we assist future leaders by offering them a more structured way to proceed with complex decision making in an uncertain alpine environment?

This is a core element of AIARE avalanche education. Decision making always involves the group as a whole though, and is not something the leader does alone. AIARE provides a schematic decision making framework and other aids in a small field book to be used in trip planning and for decision making in the field, by all party members. I know Mountaineers who are adapting this manual for general alpine use, beyond avalanche terrain.
