There are several ways to set-up a tandem rappel. All of them work pretty well when there is only one rope length to rappel. For multi-pitch tandem rappels, a rappel anchor must be found or created for each new rappel. The attendant and victim must then safely tie into the new anchor, pull the rope, run it through the new rappel anchor, set up the device for the next rappel, and safely untie and transfer the load from the anchor to the device to initiate the rappel.
Multi-pitch tandem rappelling is greatly facilitated by constructing a three-legged rescue spider using a standard cordelette. The spider is easily and quickly constructed (see p. 90 in Tyson and Loomis, "Climbing Self Rescue). It is also possible to construct a Purcell Prussik on the tie-in leg of the spider, which further facilitates transferring the load from the anchor to the device. (I will send a picture of the latter modification to anyone who emails me: gagliardi@nventure.com)
I suggest that we either add the rescue spider technique to the current tandem rappel techniques presented in Freedom 8, or substitute the spider for these techniques since it has greater applicability and versatility.
